Fact Check: Election Commission Did Not Remove AAP’s Poll Posters, No, It’s False

What Is The Claim?

Online, a video shows a man on a moving truck taking down banners from an electricity post. He says that he followed the Model Code of Conduct by removing the AAP signs, but not the BJP flags.

A lot of people on social media say that the Election Commission of India is “undermining” the AAP’s campaign for the Indian general election. After the election commission announced the dates for the Lok Sabha polls on March 16, 2024, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) went into effect. The code is a list of rules that political groups must follow during elections.

The video went global, and someone shared it on X (formerly Twitter) with the message, “Shame on you @ECISVEEP.” Every government agency will be controlled by the ECI once the Model Code of Conduct is put into place. It was okay for the leader of one of the ONLY five national political parties to be arrested. Now, they are only attacking the AAP’s campaign. Election that is Free and Fair” Over 1,60,000 people looked at the post. You can find archives of posts like this one here and here.

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), which is the youth wing of the Congress party, has flags that were taken down in the video. The video was made in January 2024, a few months before the Model Code of Conduct became law.
